The police have tighten security ahead of tonight’s Manchester derby between Manchester United and their city rival.

The Lowry Hotel, where Jose Mourinho, Manchester United manager, lives, was searched by two sniffer dogs before his team joined him at the venue for an overnight stay.

It is said that the attack on Borussia Dortmund’s team bus ahead of their home Champions League clash with Monaco necessitate the sweep which came after talks between the hotel and the club’s security staff.

Armed police officers will be on standby for the game to respond in seconds should there be any incidents.

Also additional teams of covert, specially trained officers will be deployed at secret spots near the Etihad.

Tonight game carries is very significant in the race for a top-four position with Manchester United just a point behind fourth-placed Manchester City and three points behind Liverpool. Victory tonight will therefore see United move to fourth or third position depending on the number of goals.

Police trained in identifying suspicious packages will be on duty, along with sniffer dogs, as part of an enhanced operation.

Emergency plans have been made to keep United fans in their seats after the game in the event of any controversy
