The University of Ilorin has said that it will be producing Speed limiters in large quantity as it has gotten corporate investors who are bidding for the mass production of the device.
The speed limiter will aid in curbing road accidents which claims lives on a daily basis in Nigeria.
The device will prevent vehicle's from exceeding a specified limit, thereby preventing the driver from over-speeding.
The Director of university of Ilorin Laboratory to Product centre Prof. Sulyman Age-AbdulKareem
said on Wednesday that the Speed limiter has two prototypes.
He said the product is being patented and would be ready by next month.
Age-AbdulKareem who doubles as the director of the research team said that the university was considering several funding options and raising inquiry to get the best of the project.
Age-AbdulKareem said the investment offers made to the school were being examined by the Vice Chancellor Prof Abdul Ganiyu Ambali, and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Management Service, Prof. Adedayo Abdulkareem after which they would be meeting with the investors.
Age-AbdulKareem expressed hope that an investment model which enables students to work and study sounded exciting.
He alluded that it would afford a living wage where both staff and students worked and studied liketheir counterparts abroad.
The professor’s optimism was infectious as he talked about how the project could increase the universities internally generated revenue and also conserve the nation’s foreign exchange by minimizing importation of production materials and encourage local engineers.
The Vice Chancellor said that the federal government had thrown an open challenge for universities to come up with a device that could curb the rate of accidents in the country and Unilorin is so far the first school to live up to the challenge.
Ambali who said he had tested the device on a vehicle gave his vote of confidence to the researchers claim.
The VC said the Standard Organization have been informed about the product.
The Speed limiter device is a step in the right direction for the University of Ilorin setting the pace for other universities both private and public to tow the line.
The University of Ilorin with a 54 hectare land mass is the only government university in Nigeria that is reputed to have the most stable academic calendar under good leadership.
Could this be the reason the university was able to step up to the FG’s challenge?
With the many challenges bedeviling the educational sector, this feat achieved by university of Ilorin can only point to one direction, the leadership of the universities have to be creative.
Creativity in producing more than just humans with certificates in hand but products that reflects the value of the certificate being awarded.
In developed countries the speed limiter may not be a major technology but in our climes it is the foundation for another engineer to build on leading to a better invention, that is if the universities are willing to take university of Ilorin as a competitor they are willing to outdo.
The universities are ripe for a functional challenge that transcends theory and can improve the environment in all ramifications.
Funding is a major problem most government owned universities complain of , but any university can become creative and source funding from investors , investors will only fund projects that are viable and guarantees a return, hence the need for viable and functional projects that solve the need of the society.
