19-year-old escaped jungle justice to face court trial over theft


Hassan Umar, a 19-year-old man was on Friday brought before a Lagos Magistrate court over a two count charge of stealing an Itel phone valued at N13,500, Glo recharge card worth N1000 and cash of N4000.

One of the victim told Graca Gist that the accused, who went ahead to steal from another shop at Dopemu few hours after he stole from a shop at oshodi, was about to be burnt by the angry mob before Policemen on patrol rescued him from jingle justice.

The prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, told the court that the offenses were committed on Wednesday, May 17, 2017.

Clement said that the accused stole an Itel phone belonging to Mrs. Funmilayo Adeeyo who resides at 15, Ariyibi Oke Street Oshodi, Lagos and N13,500, Glo recharge card worth N1000 and cash of N4000 belong to one Keji Ademosu, who resides at 161, Dopemu road Agege.

He told the court that the offences contravened Sections 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

However, Hassan who pleaded guilty at the Police station made a 'U-turn' and pleaded not guilty at the court.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Y.O Ekogbulu, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N20, 000, with two sureties in like sum with evidence of Tax particulars.

Ekogbulu adjourned the case until June 28.
