The Vice-Chancellor of University of Ilorin, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali has said that no fewer than 104,000 admission seekers applied for admission into the university during the 2017/2018 academic session.
He, however, said the university can only admit about 11,000 students.He made this known during the 40th anniversary of the varsity’s Department of History and International Studies in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on Thursday.
According to him, UNILORIN remains the most applied for university in Nigeria by admission seekers for the consecutive fourth time.
The VC pleaded with the about 93,000 applicants who will not be offered admission and their parents and guardians to show understanding with the university over the development.
The Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed said the study of history is important to understand the past and predict the future
He called for the protection of historical monuments in Nigeria.
Ahmed, who was represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. Aminat Ahmed said his administration will construct roads that will give access to historical sites in the state.
He further stated the commitment of his administration to maintain a peaceful and secure environment in the state as well greater access to quality education in the state.
The Head of Department, History and International Studies. UNILORIN, Dr. Ibrahim Jawondo called on corporate organisations and philanthropists to assist the department in its quest for more infrastructural and human capital development.
