Former Manchester United striker and reigning world footballer of the year, Cristiano Ronaldo, has set another record, of becoming the first athlete to attain 100 million followers on Instagram.
The 32-year-old Portuguese broke the record on Thursday but still trail behind pop stars Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez on social media platform.

Ronaldo, who is a regular user of the social network, frequently displays pictures of him playing in his most recent fixtures, attracting millions of likes every time.

His closest sports rival with millions of followers is Neymar with 74m and Lionel Messi with 71m.

It could be recalled that Cristiano Ronaldo in 2016 became the first athlete to surpass 200 million followers on social media and the Real Madrid star wrote on his Twitter page, “Really proud to be the 1st athlete with 200 million social media followers. A big thank you to all my fans!”

Ronaldo had 109.7 million followers on Facebook, 49.6 million on Instagram and 40.7 million on Twitter.

Cristiano Ronaldo currently plays for Real Madrid, a prominent football club in Spain.
