Airline served banana for gluten free diet

An airline passenger requested a gluten-free meal for breakfast, but what he got made him go bananas.

Londoner Martin Pavelka was flying on an All Nippon Airways flight from Tokyo to Sydney late last month when he was served the un-a-peeling morning repast – a solitary banana marked “GF,” for gluten-free, the Standard of the UK reported.

He even received a packet containing utensils, a napkin and salt to go along with his meal on the second leg of a nine-hour, $1,550 equivalent to (N473215.00) trip.

Pavelka, a 32-year-old auditor from Haggerston, suffers from celiac disease so he must avoid gluten to prevent food-poisoning-like symptoms.

“As a celiac, I always order gluten-free meals on my flights. Sometimes they are bland, sometimes they are actually much better than the ordinary meal service,” he told the paper.

“On this flight, I was left literally speechless. One single banana arrived,” he said. “All other passengers were served full breakfast meal consisting of eggs, sausage, mushrooms, bread, and yogurt.

“This was a nine-hour flight. Although definitely gluten free, the banana did not keep me full for very long,” he said.

He said he had been served a larger meal the previous evening when the flight departed – but was stunned by his breakfast fare worthy of a small monkey.

“When the stewardess came to me, she said, ‘We’ve got a special meal for you’ and I got the banana,” he said. “I asked, ‘Is this a joke?’ She just said, ‘I’m really sorry, that’s the gluten-free meal.’”

Other passengers slipped into a fit of laughter at the yellow sight.

“In my opinion, I don’t think they really get the concept of allergies and alternative meals,” he said about ANA. “It’s so extreme. A banana — that’s good for about 15 minutes, then you’re hungry again.”

Pavelka lodged a complaint with the airline but has not heard back.

“At the price I paid, you would expect something more than that. This isn’t Easyjet or RyanAir,” he fumed.

The airline is the same one where a wild brawl took place on Monday.
