Man.United defeats Man.City, 2:0

Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford scored as 67,401 at NRG Stadium watched United win 2-0 in the first Manchester derby outside England.

New signing Lukaku beat City keeper Ederson Moraes to Paul Pogba's pass on 37 minutes. Then Rashford drove in Jesse Lingard's pass two minutes later.

Lukaku's superb goal from an acute angle and a Rashford drive proved the difference in Texas, where Jose Mourinho's United racked up their third friendly win as Pep Guardiola's City opened pre-season with a 2-0 defeat.

"I'm really pleased," said Mourinho.

"I'm sure Pep [Guardiola] is the same. The most important thing was to give the players high quality training."

Lukaku's goal was world class

There was no doubting which team looked the sharper. This was United’s third pre-season game compared to City’s first and it showed.

Mourinho has forged a reputation for being a front-runner and he is clearly determined that his team hit the ground running next season and build up an early head of steam.

Their task will be made far easier, though, if Lukaku and Rashford can demonstrate the sort of unerring finishing they showcased here to defeat their bitter local rivals.

Rashford’s goal was well taken but Lukaku’s finish from the tightest of angles, after making a fool of Ederson, was world class in every regard.

The Belgium striker scored his first United goal on his second appearance in the 2-1 victory over Salt Lake with a cool finish but this was on another level.

It was a tantalising glimpse of what may lie in store if United can feed the beast and it should not be forgotten that it stemmed from a wonderful raking pass over the top from Paul Pogba, his close friend.

Lukaku and Pogba could end up liberating each other next season.
City came close to reducing the deficit when Fernandinho's long-range shot was tipped over by Sergio Romero. And City boss Guardiola was delighted with the performance of 17-year-old midfielder Phil Foden, who was making his first-team debut.

"I don't have words to describe what I saw," Guardiola said. "His performance was at another level. He loves the club. He is a City fan. He is a gift.

"Maybe this season he will stay with us because he is special. Creating chances, always in the best position."

It was the first derby since the bombing at Manchester Arena on 22 May and both teams wore shirts with the distinctive 'worker bee' logo, which will be auctioned off to raise money for the victims.
