The House of Representatives yesterday was engulfed in a rowdy session for about 40 minutes, over President Buhari’s declaration of June 12 as the authentic Democracy Day.
The commotion was consequent upon a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Raji Olawale (APC, Lagos), calling for the recognition of the Presidential declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day.
Buhari had argued that June 12, 1993, the date of the election considered to be the fairest in Nigeria’s history, “was far more symbolic of democracy in the Nigerian context than May 29 or even October 1”.
Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, is, however, trying to keep the angry members under control as the debate on the new Democracy Day continues.
