Killings: Reps ask IGP to send more policemen to Adamawa

The Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris has been mandated  by the House of Representatives to immediately send additional personnel to 16 communities in the southern zone of Adamawa State to combat perennial attacks.

The order was given after adopting a motion of matters of urgent public importance sponsored by chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas (APC, Adamawa). In passing the motion, the House urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Presidential Committee on North East Initiatives (PCNI) to provide relief materials to the designated camps to ameliorate their sufferings.

It further mandated its committee on emergency management and disaster management and committee on IDPs Refugees and Initiative on North-East to ensure implementation. Namdas said the call followed some reprisal attacks that led to loss of lives and properties worth millions of Naira.

He expressed concern that the affected communities, including Dakasun, Bakurehi, Tugga, Wuro-Galadima, among others had been rendered homeless with over 200 hundred houses razed following the attack. The lawmaker expressed worry that the reprisal attacks were on the increase and had so far claimed over 15 lives and more than 3,000 people, mostly women and children were currently displaced.

“The displaced persons are right now staying in five IDP camps namely Waka, Gorobi, Islamiya Primary School and Mayo-Farang all in Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area with Red Cross and other voluntary organisations rendering assistance,” he said.

The motion was unanimously adopted by members when it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker Dogara. A minute silence in honour of those who lost their lives in the attack was subsequently observed.
