Senator Iyiola Omisore, the aspirant of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the Osun State on Wednesday declared his intention to push for the success of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in today’s rerun election.
Omisore, who spoke with newsmen at his country home in Ile-Ife after a meeting with some APC leaders led by the party’s National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, said he has made up his mind to join forces with the APC to ensure its victory in the seven units where the rerun will hold. But, in a swift reaction, the national leadership of SDP distanced itself from Omisore, saying it was not part of the agreement he reached with APC.
A statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Alfa Mohammed, said: “The Social Democratic Party (SDP) would like to make it categorically clear that the national leadership of the party was not part of the recent developments involving our party’s gubernatorial candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore of Osun State, and the conclusions arrived at.
We remain irrevocably committed to serving the Nigerian people on the basis of the vision, principles and goals of social democracy which underlie the philosophy of our great party, the SDP.”
Omisore said SDP was left with no option than to pitch its tent with the APC after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) failed to respond to his party’s terms and condition for a coalition government. The SDP flag bearer said he took the decision on the acceptance of his party’s manifesto, including payment of backlog of arrears to civil servants and senior citizens within the first three months of assumption of office by the party.
His words: “What is paramount to me is the practice of true democracy, good governance and accountability in Osun State and that I will never renege on my promise of good governance, accountability and human dignity in Osun State.” “Osun State has always been a stellar example of democracy where the people have consistently and freely expressed their franchise to determine who governs them.
This should remain so. Osun people have shown that it is not business as usual. It is a positive deviation from what was hitherto the norm. I am telling my people that they should go with any political party that believes in what we in the SDP stand for; good governance, social justice and accountability.
“I have already detailed how we planned to restore Osun to the path of good governance through the five thematic pillars in my manifesto I shared during the electioneering. I will not negotiate for personal gains and abandon my people.”
“My alliance is with the people of Osun state irrespective of the political party they belong. I want my people to betreated withthe dignitythey deserve. I desire thattheyhavea governmentthat will be accountable to them”. “I want them to experience the goodgovernancethefounding fathers of this state envisaged.
I have told the parties that have solicited for my support to approach the electorates and askfor their mandateasIhaveassured themthatIwillnotcoercethemforpolitical or social power. It is because I have kept my promise that has made me enjoyed their unalloyed support all these years.”
“Their voices of demand for good governance, accountability and human dignity should continue to be heard as well as salaries paid. All these are what I stand for and which the SDP had promised the people all through our electioneering campaigns which are still paramount to me as we discuss the way forward for Osun State in preparation for the governorship rerun.”
Meanwhile, former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has described as shameful, the decision of Omisore to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) in today’s Osun State gubernatorial run-off election.
”He told me he would stand firm two days ago and he told our leader and father Baba Ayo Adebanjo the same thing last night. “I do not know what has turned his head but we shall forge ahead and by God’s grace Adeleke will win,” the former minister said. He stated that there is no excuse or justification “for joining or supporting those who treated our people like filth and slaves over the last eight years and who rigged last saturday’s election.”
