Monaco to battle Juventus while holder Real Madrid face Atletico Madrid in Champions League semifinals

Defending champions Real Madrid will play their city rival Atletico Madrid while Ligue 1 leaders Monaco will take on Italian champions Juventus in the Champions League semifinals.

Eleven-time European champions Real Madrid will go in as the favorite when face their rivals Atletico Madrid in what is a repeat of last year's final.

Atletico Madrid, who is yet to win the competition, had reached the final also in 1974, but lost to Bayern. They ended Premier League champions Leicester's run in Europe by 2-1 on aggregate.

The Zinedine Zidane's team eliminated Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals and could become the first club in the Champions League history to win the competition in successive seasons.

Monaco, who will take on Italian giant Juventus in the other last-four tie, have only once reached the Champions League final. They lost to Porto under Jose Mourinho in 2004.

They eliminated Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund to reach this year’s semi-final.

Their opponent, Juventus, where European champions in 1985 and 1996, but lost the final to Barcelona in 2015 by two replied goals to none. They however, defeated Barcelona under Luis Enrique's by 3-0 on aggregate in the quarter final.

The first legs will take place on the 2nd and 3rd May 2017, while the return legs will be played in the following week.

The Champions League final will be played June 3at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
