The Queen of Britain turned 91 years on Friday, Queen Elizabeth the second is regarded as the world’s longest reigning monarch.
As is her style the queen celebrates her birthday in her usual low key manner without any formal engagement planned.
At the Tower of London and in Hyde Park Artillery gun salutes marked the occasion. The queen whose birthday is celebrated twice a year, officially in june celebrates her birthday privately.
Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne at the age of 25, after the death of her father king George VI. Born on April 21, 1926 in Bruton Street in central London, the queen has reigned over Britain for years.
Reuters reported Despite her age, she still regularly carries out official duties although she has cut back on the number of engagements in recent years, passing these onto other members of the Windsor family such as to her son and heir Prince Charles and grandsons, Princes William and Harry.
Polls show she remains very popular amongst Britons and royal aides say there is little prospect of her abdicating. Asked if she was well during a trip to Northern Ireland last year, she quipped "Well, I'm still alive".
Elizabeth attained the title of the longest reigning queen on the 9 September 2015, after she exceeded the reign of Queen Victoria which had lasted an incredible 63 years, seven months and three days from 20 June 1837 to 22 January 1901.
She is also currently the oldest monarch alive after the death of the previous holder, His Majesty King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, who died aged 90.
