Nigeria Telecommunication brands, MTN Nigeria through their TV show tagged “Who want to be a Millionaire” has over time been an avenue for people to get rewarded for their academic prowess and individual talent through a question and answer method.
The telecommunication giants stepped up their game when they decided to use this Tv show platform to recognize, celebrate and reward notable figures that have not been rewarded for their in the society, that have so far showed true patriotism and a high sense of moral value in their respective social structure.
The Tv game show had in attendance in its latest recording, the mother of one of Nigeria foremost footballer, Late Rashidi Yekini, as a footballer playing for the Nigeria national team, he scored a total of 37 goals, and represented the nation in five major tournaments, including two World Cups where he scored the country's first-ever goal in the competition. He was also named the African Footballer of the Year in 1993.
His moter Alhaja Sikirat Yekini,was priviledged to be a participant on the Tv show, where she was assisted by veteran actor, Dejumo Lewis and Binta Ayo Mogaji-Oduleye during another platform of the show tagged “Who wants to be a Millionaire”, she won an hefty sum of Two Million Naira in the Tv game show.
This strugging Otogenatrian mother lost the famous footballer to an illness that extended for a period of time. In 2011, news media in Nigeria begun issuing reports of his failing health, and he was said to suffer from bipolar disorder, depression and some other undisclosed psychiatric condition. He died in Ibadan on 4 May 2012 at the age of 48.
After it was reported in August 2016, Yekini’s mother was living in penury despite the heroic feats performed by her son before his demise, the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, hired a maid and a nurse to take care of the octogenarian.
He also donated a tricycle to Yekini’s younger brother, Hakeem.
Saraki said that he had financed the sinking of a borehole and renovated the residence of Alhaja Sikirat Yekini and upgraded her shop to a mini mart.
He had explained that the aim was to make the family not to feel neglected or abandoned.
The Senate President also announced an annual football competition for U-13 boys “so another Rasheed Yekini can be discovered among the youth from Ijagbo, Ira and Offa.”
