Nick Cannon is grieving the death of his childhood friend, a woman killed in Sunday's deadly birthday pool party shooting in an upscale San Diego neighborhood.

Cannon, 36, revealed in an Instagram post that his friend Monique Clark is the woman who died when Peter Selis, 49, began shooting during a pool party at the La Jolla Crossroads complex at around 6 p.m.

"My heart hurts with great sadness tonight. I just learned that the one life lost in the senseless and tragic mass shooting in San Diego was my childhood friend, who was more like family, Miss Monique Clark," the star wrote. "Such a beautiful spirit with an infectious smile. I have nothing but wonderful memories of this Angel.

"He added: "Tears can't express the pain and shock. A mother of 3, a sister, a daughter, a cousin, a friend and a Queen ... Rest in Paradise."

Six other people injured in the shooting were - three men and three women. Two of the victims were in critical but stable condition on Monday, San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said at news conference. All are expected to survive.

Although police have not publicly named Clark as a victim, friends and family of the woman have revealed her identity to several media outlets.

"It feels surreal. I had just given her a hug maybe six minutes before the gunshots started," Drew Phillips, a guest at the party who witnessed the shooting, told PEOPLE. "She was probably the nicest person you've ever met."

Phillips, who confirmed Clark was killed in the shooting, said he had been at the party for just 20 minutes before he saw Selis "shooting into the crowd."

"At first I thought it was fire crackers and then I realized it was gunfire," he said.

At the Monday address to reporters, Zimmerman said Selis was fatally shot by police. She noted that Selis was "distraught" and "depressed" over a recent breakup.

"[Selis] entered the pool area and laid on a lounge chair, called his ex-girlfriend and told his ex-girlfriend that he had just shot two people," Zimmerman said. "[He] talked to his girlfriend as he continued to fire [his] weapon."
