Yaya Toure signs new one-year deal with Manchester City

Ivory Coast midfielder, Yaya Toure has decided to extend his stay at the Etihad by signing a one-year contract extension at Manchester City .

Toure’s current £230,000-a-week deal was due to run out at the end of this month, but he has agreed terms to take his City career into an eighth season.

Toure, who turned 34 last month, was unlikely to remain at City in September when he was frozen out by new coach Pep Guardiola over comments made by his controversial agent Dimitri Seluk.

However, he made 30 appearances after returning to action in November, playing his way back into the manager’s plans over the rest of the season.

Toure said:

‘I told myself the journey at City is not done. When I received a call from (director of football) Txiki Begiristain and talked to the manager I was very delighted.

‘I want to enjoy it at this age still and remaining here is a massive, massive thing. It is a great club, going in the right direction with new players who are coming in. Our mentality is always to win week in, week out.

‘I think to see all these years through at this club, we have had seven years consecutively in the Champions League and every year we’re supposed to win, we want to win. The way the club is set out, the fans and the people who work for this club have to expect a lot from the players, to bring trophies and make this club become the most important one in the world. I’m very delighted to continue to be part of this family

‘I see myself always playing for trophies. Playing for nothing would be a bit boring and I’m always delighted to work hard for a big challenge. Now to sign one year more at this club is something unbelievable and I’m going to enjoy it and give everything I can.

‘Last year I was so hurt because I didn’t lift one trophy. I was so angry. I didn’t show it but, of course, it was difficult. It was a lot of games and competitions but normally this club is used to having trophies but we never know.

‘I’m enjoying lifting trophies. The pride and the feeling of happiness. You feel important and special when you lift trophies. That’s what I want to feel again. I want to feel that more than the previous years that I’ve been here and I hope that continues.

‘I know I can do it because the manager has come in with his team and has helped me a lot this year. They’ve put their faith in me and my mentality is very right. In the end we didn’t make it and I’m sorry to the fans because they deserve more but I hope this year we’ll make it better.

‘The fans have been brilliant with me. It means a lot when fans have a lot of love for you and always support you. They always wanted me to stay at the club and enjoy it with me. Every time I step on to the field they’re singing my name as well. Not a lot of things can beat it. It makes you so happy.

‘I’ve been at different clubs and had the respect of the fans, but the fans of City have been the most important ones I’ve had in my career. I’m very delighted to stay.

‘They have two or three [songs for me]. That’s unbelievable. To feel that and hear that when you step on the field. To have such respect of the fans and to be so supportive. In any difficult moment the fans are massive for me. They are the most important people. Sometimes when you talk with fans away from the field you can feel the love and I think it’s superb.’
