“Manchester United will have a good season and come close to winning trophies, if not win one,” Souness told The Times.
“But I don’t see them taking the Champions League and Premier League.
“I think they will be a better version of last year. Pragmatic. A side who can dig results out. But I don’t see their football being any better.
“When push comes to shove Jose Mourinho will revert to a long-ball game, bring on Marouane Fellaini and launch it — and power is a big part of his blueprint.
“United will be very dangerous because their players are tailor-made to do that, but it’s not the Man United way.
“And I believe they will still come up short in the two big trophies they’re aiming for.
“The better teams will stand up to them and out-football them.
“While you can still rely on Mourinho to get the best out of a squad, he doesn’t quite have the quality he had in his title-winning Chelsea seasons.”
