Akure killings: Police accuse NSCDC of shielding officer

The Ondo State Police Command on Sunday alleged that the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, was delaying investigation into the alleged killing of a woman in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

A yet-to-be-identified NSCDC officer allegedly shot the woman, identified as Mama Delta, to death in Akure, on Wednesday.

The death of the woman reportedly started a protest among residents of the town.

It was gathered that the woman was among the people accompanying the corpse of a bricklayer, Yakubu Lasisi, who was also killed in an accident involving another NSCDC officer in Akure, to the cemetery.

A source alleged that the NSCDC command wanted to sweep the case under the carpet by refusing to produce the alleged killer officer for investigation.

The police command Public Relations Officer, Mr Femi Joseph, said the NSCDC was making it difficult for the police to commence investigation into the matter.

He said, “We need the suspect; we need to interrogate him, but he has not been produced. We are still expecting them (NSCDC) to produce him. We have served them formally to produce the suspect, but up till this time, we have not heard from them.

“May be they are expecting a directive from their headquarters before they produce him, I do not know and I cannot speak for them. All I know is that they have not produced the suspect. “

The PPRO, however, said an NSCDC officer, one Ifeoluwa, who was arrested for allegedly killing the bricklayer, would soon be charged to court.

When contacted, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State command, Mr Oladapo Samuel, who had earlier denied the involvement of officers of the command in the alleged killing, said he was not available for comment.

“I am not in town now. I will find out when I get to the office tomorrow (today),” he said.
