Execution time is near for Rev. King and others on death row in Lagos prisons

Rev. King, real name Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, will soon be executed alongside other prisoners that are on death row in Lagos prisons according to the Lagos State Government.
Adeniji Kazeem, Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, told the media at a ministerial press conference in Lagos today, stating that the state government was reviewing the matter with a view to taking a critical decision very soon.

Rev. King was sent to death by hanging by an Appeal Court, a decision which the cleric attorneys challenge at the Supreme Court.

However, on 27 February 2016 the Supreme Court upheld the judgment of the Appeal Court which passed the penalty.

Kazeem revealed that he stopped at the Lagos state prisons lately and learned that those on death row were acting as though they had certain rights which excluded them from being executed. He disclosed that the prison officials complained about this insolence and called on the Government to act and remedy the situation.

He further stated that the previous administration had not deemed it fit to sign documents for the execution of convicts on death row but promised that the new Ambode administration was moving towards required document to make sure those on death row are executed.

“Lots of people are on death row, Rev. King is not the only one on death row, it is on the instruction of Ambode that I visited the prisons recently and I discuss the issue with the prison officials and they expressed concern. We are moving in that direction of signing. The prison officials said we need to look at that seriously. Those on death row are beginning to think they have some rights. We are going to move in that direction, you will hear from me, but I will not tell you the exact date,” he said.

Moving on to the issue of Major Hamzat Al-Mustapha, the Chief Security Officer of Late Military Head of State General Sani Abacha accused of killing the late Kudirat Abiola, Kazeem revealed that the state government had re-opened the case, stating that the government was putting machinery in motion to ensure that justice was served on the matter.
