Dino Melaye seeks for declaration of 'state of emergency' in Kogi

The conflict between the Kogi State Governor, Mr. Yahaya Bello, and the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, yesterday took a new twist.
Melaye said he would urge the senate in a motion to bid President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in Kogi state, after raising a point of order to explain an assassination attempt on his life by assassins allegedly sent by the state governor.

Describing the security situation in the state as being in a state of anarchy, Melaye said that the intervention of the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency was necessary to prevent further degeneration.

Melaye, under order 43 of the senate standing rule during plenary, urged the senate to instruct the Inspector General of police, Ibrahim Idris to instantly carry out an audit of the police armory in the Kogi state police command

According to him, before the coming of the incumbent governor of Kogi, the state had never experienced the high number of crimes and anarchy as presently going on in the area.

Melaye who vowed to come to the floor with a motion on his alleged assassination, said his decision to prevail on the President to declare a state of emergency was due to the increasing outbreak of insecurity and anarchy in the state.

He said but for the intervention of the Police and members of the Department of State Services in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, he would have been killed by criminals allegedly sent to kill him by the state governor

He told the Senate that the incident, which took place on Monday was the second time an assassination attempt was made on his person in the state.

Melaye said: “Mr. President, I seek your indulgence to read Section 307 of the constitution as amended and specifically l want to read.
