FG’ll take care of you, Osinbajo tells flood victims

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday assured victims of flood in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State that the Federal Government would do everything possible to assuage their suffering.

Osinbajo and Governor Aminu Masari visited Jibia flood site yesterday evening. This came as the chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, and the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, have commiserated with the governor and people of Katsina State over the flood disaster which claimed about 52 lives and left over 20 persons missing.

The vice president said he was in the state on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari to sympathise with the people affected by flood. He was also in company with the Director-General (DG), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Mustapha Maihajia (an engineer), and his State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) counterpart, Dr. Aminu Waziri.

The vice president said efforts would be made to ensure that adequate relief materials reached all of the victims, most of who were camped at the Mohammed Rabiu Model Primary School, Jibia. He said: “The President has asked me to assure you that everything will be done to ensure that everybody is taken care of, and that we will make sure this sort of thing does not repeat itself again. “As Nigerians, we all deserve to live our lives happily; we deserve to be treated well. The President has assured everybody that, working with the state government, we will do all that is necessary.

“Where compensation is necessary, we will compensate, where rebuilding is necessary, we will do so.” The rain, which led to the flooding on Sunday night, started about 11p.m. and ended about 3a.m. at the end, 1,104 people were rendered homeless. One of the victims, Mallam Sani Yahaya, said his house had collapsed and as a result water swept away everything in the house, including his newly wedded wife, Ummi Hindatu Abubakar (22).

Yahaya said his wife’s body was discovered at Madarunfa village in neighbouring Niger Republic. According to one of SEMA officials, as at 3p.m. yesterday, the agency’s updated record shows that about 1,104 households were affected by the flood as their houses were swept away. According to the official, the death toll so far recorded stood at 52 people as at Tuesday afternoon. He, however, said that the search for the missing people was still on, likewise the update of people who lost their houses to the flood.

At the time our correspondent visited the IDPs camp, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Alhaji Abubakar Yahaya Kusada, was at there along with other members of the Assembly. The lawmakers sympathised with the victims and prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives. They also prayed for the quick recovery of those who sustained various degrees of injury and prayed to Allah to guard against reoccurrence of such incident in the future.

The flood followed torrential rain which led to the death of 52 people and destruction of over 500 houses. Scores of domestic animals were killed while 20 people were missing. Both NEMA and SEMA have been working to provide the displaced persons with relief materials such as food items, mattresses and medication. Meanwhile, Kalu, who recently visited the state during his “Peace Tour of the North,” prayed and extended his condolences to the people who lost over 500 houses, livestock and property. According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Kenneth Udeh, the former governor described the incident as an unfortunate natural disaster.

The former governor, however, encouraged the people not be dismayed by the incident. He said: “Out of my sincere heart I express my passionate condolence to the good people of Katsina State over the tragic flood incident which occurred in Jibia area of the state. “I extend my profound sympathy to those who lost their loved ones, houses and other valuables as a result of the flood which wreaked havoc in the state.”

Earlier on Monday, Saraki expressed his heartfelt condolences with the people and government of Katsina and Ogun states over the death, injuries and loss of property occasioned by flood in the two states. Saraki, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, called on the security agencies and emergency response teams to do all in their power to mitigate the pains and sufferings of the people as a result of the incidents. While calling on town planning agencies to take their job more seriously, Saraki called on Nigerians in flood prone localities to heed the warnings of the Nigerian Metrological Agency (NIMET) to prevent further loss of lives and property.

He said: “My heart goes out to families who lost loved ones in these unfortunate incidents. I wish those receiving medical attention quick recovery. “What happened in Katsina and Ogun states was a nightmare. We have a duty to play our role to ensure that this avoidable loss of precious lives does not repeat itself both in the affected communities and elsewhere in the country.”
