Warning to all Gunners fans: Arsenal face a 'massive' challenge to make the top four says Arsene Wenger
Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger , says they face a "massive" challenge to qualify for the Champions League, and added that "nothing" has changed about his future. Wenger, whose deal ends this summer, has led Arsenal to top-four finishes in each of his 20 seasons in charge.
This means Arsenal are in danger of failing to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 21 years.
Arsenal, in sixth-place, is seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, which sits in the last Champions League qualification spot. Manchester United is three points ahead of Arsenal in fifth, with both clubs having eight games left to play and City seven.
"We might get there, we might not get there, but the only thing to get there is to believe we can do it and that's what we have to focus on," Wenger said
"It's not the fear to fail, it's the desire to make it and that's the only chance we have to make it."
On Monday, Arsenal will plays at relegation-threatened Middlesbrough. Its final games include a north London derby at Spurs on April 30 and a home game against Jose Mourinho's Manchester United a week later.
Wenger accepted the disposition in the Gunners camp had "not been very enjoyable" following the 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on Monday; it’s their third league loss in the last five games they played. Arsenal made a disorganized performance and forward Theo Walcott questioned the team's desire and fight by saying that Palace "wanted it more."
According to Wenger, "it is not acceptable (that we wanted it less)."
"That's what I said straight after the game. We were beaten, and you have to face reality and respond," Wenger added.
About the lessons he had learned from the defeat, the Frenchman said: "To play with restriction and a little bit of a handbrake on doesn't help the performance. We are under pressure to deliver and the best way to do it is to play with freedom and accept the risk."
Wenger prays his goalkeeper Petr Cech and defender Laurent Koscielny will come back to the squad soon following injury.
Although he has been offered a new two-year deal, but he is yet to announce whether he will continue.
Five defeats in their last 10 Premier League games have prompted some Arsenal fans to call for Wenger to leave the club.
Wenger, whose deal ends this summer, has led Arsenal to top-four finishes in each of his 20 seasons in charge.
When he was questioned on Friday about his own future, Wenger said: "What is happening at board level is not down to me. I focus on what is down to me, the performance of the team and what the fans are interested in is the performance of the team."
Also Wenger declined to comments on reports that forward Alexis Sanchez had been offered a new £300,000-a-week deal.
Sanchez, Chile international, 28, whose contract with the Gunners will last until the summer of 2018, was nominated for PFA Player of the Year award this week after scoring 18 goals and assisting nine in the league this season.
"I'm very happy because it rewards a very strong season if you look at his numbers," added Wenger.
"He basically prefers to play wide rather than up front because he can get the ball more. He has to keep that balance between providing and goalscoring because he has both in the locker."
