The Dutch winger arrived from PSV in 2015 with a reputation as one of the world's best young players on the back of a 28-goal season with the Eredivisie outfit.
His 18 months in the North West didn't go to plan, though, and he was offloaded to Lyon in January 2017 as Jose Mourinho began to overhaul his squad.
The move to United perhaps came too early in Memphis' career but the Reds proved how highly they regarded him by including a buy-back clause in the deal that saw him move to France.
The 24-year-old has 28 goals and 28 assists in 80 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit and he showed just how far he has come when he returned to Manchester in the Champions League with Lyon in September.
In a shock 2-1 victory for the French giants at the Etihad, Memphis looked like a player worthy of wearing United red. Sharp and speedy in attack, the former PSV man was also hard-working and industrious when City had the ball.
He assisted Nabil Fekir's strike and would've grabbed a goal for himself if it wasn't for Ederson's heroics in the City goal.
"Manchester is still red," he joked afterwards.
He was at it again on the big stage on Saturday night as the Netherlands humbled Germany 3-0 in Amsterdam.
The winger delivered the teasing corner from which Virgil van Dijk ultimately opened the scoring before getting on the scoresheet himself with a composed finish past Manuel Neuer in the closing stages.
In Football Oranje's player ratings Memphis was given an 8.5 out of 10, making him their man of the match.
"The star once again for Netherlands," Michael Bell wrote. "Just like against Peru, Memphis was the key attacking force for Oranje and played a role in all three goals.
"His excellent corner led to the first, he scored the second and a clever dummy led to the third. Could have had another with a strike that came off the bar. "His work ethic can not be questioned in an Oranje shirt and he is developing into a real leader under Koeman."
United are devoid of leaders right now and Memphis, at his current level, would be a welcome addition to Jose Mourinho's playing squad.
