The Arsenal defeated Boro at the Riverside Stadium to survive a Monday night trial to earn a hard-fought 2-1 victory with goals from Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil in either half, but there was only one thing on the minds of football fans after the result.
With this victory Arsenal has now close the gap on top four in their attempt to secure a Champions League place to seven points with six games left to play.
The Gunners had their first shot on goal after 28 minutes of play but Aaron Ramsey failed to finish off a nice build-up play from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Oliver Giroud.
Nigerian player, Alex Iwobi was not in action for Arsenal who ended their four-game winless run away from home in the Premier League.
Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger experimented with a 3-4-3 formation for the clash in the north-east, with fans preparing for the worst when they saw an unfamiliar line-up which included rookie defender Rob Holding, who was making only his fourth Premier League start of the season.
In the 41st minute, Sanchez curled in a brilliant free-kick to hand Arsene Wenger’s side the lead into the break. Though, Marten De Roon headed in Gaston Ramirez’s lob into the net in the 13th minute but the linesman’s flag for offside.
In the second half, Middlesbrough started well and forced a corner which was wasted. But in the 50th minute Alvaro Negredo restored parity for the hosts with an improvised volley to lift the fans at the Riverside Stadium.
Stewart Downing had the chance to make it 2-1 but he blasted his shot wide after latching on to George Friend’s cross.
Unfortunately for the host, Mesut Ozil fired in a low shot from 12 yards out to cancel Negredo’s equalizer and restore the Gunners’ lead.

It was a win greeted with a sense of relief by Gunners fans, but by a sense of disappointment from fans of many other clubs, because one of their recent traditions has been ruined.
