'This update gives you the ability to have more of those realtime conversations while giving you the control to hide your status altogether,' they added.
To do this, go to your Instagram profile page, then click on the Settings button in the right-hand corner, marked by the gear symbol.
From there, scroll down to the 'Activity Status' option under 'Privacy and Security.'
There, you can toggle the 'Show Activity Status' option on or off. The option is automatically turned on by default in the app.
Before the launch of the green dot, Instagram still informed your followers when you were last active.
In Instagram Direct, it would show if you were active within the last half-hour or if you were active now, displaying that information in grey text under your username.
As TechCrunch pointed out, the feature somewhat contradicts with Instagram's other efforts to manage time spent on the app.
By letting other users know when you're online, it might encourage more people to obsessively check the app.
Instagram has been working on a variety of features aimed at helping people curb their daily use of the app.
Last month, Instagram launched an 'All Caught Up' feature that lets users know when they've reached the end of all the new posts on their feed.
In addition to that, it's been speculated that Instagram might launch a 'Usage Insights' tool so that users can see data on how often they're opening the app.
