Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho warned his bosses against signing of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer transfer window, according to the Sunday Mirror.
The Portuguese superstar unexpectedly became available during the window and left Real Madrid – the club he had represented since leaving United in 2009 – to join Italian champions Juventus.
Ronaldo, aged 33, had long been linked with a return to Old Trafford, but Mourinho is reported to have warned against the signing.
The Red Devils’ boss did not want to hand the £90m fee to his former club and was reluctant to see £500,000 of his weekly wage budget going to Ronaldo. He told executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to instead focus on defensive reinforcements.
Mourinho is said to be furious with Woodward, who was filling to splash the cash on Ronaldo but failed to land a new centre-back.
United missed out on all of Mourinho’s preferred options, Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire or deadline-day target Diego Godin.
