How does Pogba respond?
Weeks. That's how long Jose Mourinho had been deliberating his decision to strip Paul Pogba of the vice-captaincy with his coaching staff. Taking the armband off United's talisman was a bold move but, to his credit, Pogba has responded with a herculean effort in training this week.
Just as he did against Leicester in the first game of the season, after training 'amazingly well' following his post-World Cup break, Pogba will want to channel those performances on gameday. Particularly after such a turbulent week.
Whatever the result, he will probably resist the mixed zone post-match. Probably.
Life on the road
Last month's defeat at Brighton again raised serious questions about United's mentality with Pogba admitting his attitude was not right. Since then, though, United have put in some of their steeliest performances of the season away from home.
It has mainly been at Old Trafford where 'some boys', as Mourinho put it, are not learning their lesson when it comes to matching the opposition's intensity. Away from home, United have won their last three games and will fancy their chances of extending that run at the London Stadium.
Martial or Sanchez?
It may seem a stupid question given Mourinho's persistence with Alexis Sanchez on the left wing, and his longstanding issues with Anthony Martial, but it is worth asking.
Sanchez had another afternoon to forget against Wolves and again failed to complete a full 90 minutes; Martial has impressed in his last two starts, against Young Boys and Derby, and has literally put his eight-month goal drought behind him.
The Frenchman also has a brilliant record against West Ham - scoring five goals in his last three games against the Hammers.
Lee Grant returns to the London Stadium
Lee Grant has had some big moments in his career - making his Premier League debut after a 17-year wait, *that* performance for Stoke at Old Trafford in 2016, signing for United..
But being parachuted in for the final 20 minutes of a Carabao Cup clash against Derby, his former club, will have been right up there after Sergio Romero was sent off. The veteran even managed a couple of brilliant saves before the tie went to penalties.
With Romero suspended, Grant will take his place on the substitutes bench at the London Stadium. It will bring back memories of his last visit, when he made himself available for Stoke despite breaking a bone in his wrist.
Keep your heads
United only had one player, Pogba, sent off in all competitions last season; already Mourinho's side have clocked up three red cards in their last four domestic games.
While that ultimately did not cost them against Burnley and Watford, Derby prevailed in a dramatic penalty shootout win after Romero was sent for an early bath following a handball outside the area.
United missed the suspended Nemanja Matic against Wolves and Marcus Rashford would have been a useful option to have on the bench. That record can't continue.
