The Champions League quarter-finals - 2nd leg has finally come to an end. Leicester at the end of the first half needed to score three goals without reply to go through to the next round after falling behind at home in the first half.
In the other quarter-finals encounter between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, the game remain goalless at half time, though Real Madrid should have been ahead had they converted their chances.
If the games had ended as they stands at the first half, both Atletico and Real Madrid would have made it through to the semifinal and at the end of the final whistle that was the case.
However, a really nice finish from Jamie Vardy, a striker who has found his mojo again, equalized for Leicester who piled men into the box. A cross from the right comes through to Ben Chilwell on the left, he wants a penalty when his shot was blocked by Stefan Savic, and it runs into the path of Jamie Vardy, who looks like he is going to smash it but sidefoots in at the last minute to give the Foxes an equalizer at home. Then, Leicester still needed two more goals to move to the next round, but that's better than three.
Jamie Vardy has scored some brilliant goals in recent weeks, some instinctive finishes into the top corner. That looked easy but he had two defenders on the line and found the net well. Two goals in half an hour, with stoppages sound like a mission impossible for Leicester and it was.
Speaking to BT Sport, Leicester striker Jamie Vardy said: "We absolutely gave it our all, especially in the second half. They made a lot of blocks on the line.
"We were in the ascendancy. We made a tactical change with Leo (Ulloa) on to give an aerial threat. Unfortunately it wasn't to be. But we gave it our all and left it all out on the pitch.
"On another day some could have gone in. But we can be proud.
"We knew it was going to be hard. Every game so far has been the same. From the display you've seen it was a fantastic effort
"We have some unfinished business in the Premier League. That was a new experience for a lot of the lads and we have given it our all.
"The fans have got us through the 90 minutes."
Former Leicester manager Martin O'Neill also commented on the game: "It's an extraordinary story, it's not a fluke, you can't fluke winning the league. Then to carry this on and win their group and knock out Sevilla before giving Atletico Madrid a real fright, it's an incredible run, phenomenal."
Craig Shakespeare, Leicester City boss, speaking to BT Sport said:
“We needed to leave everything out there. Second half, even first half we played really well. I had to make the change earlier than I thought, but we had them rattled with the effort and commitment we showed. It's no discredit to lose to a team of that calibre.
The momentum was with us after Vardy's goal and we needed that second one when the opportunity came but it just wasn't to be.
The whole club, from the supporters to the players to the owners can be immensely proud, but I've just said to the players that they should want more of this and they've agreed that that's what they want.”
At the end Leicester was knocked out by 2-1 on aggregate against Atletico Madrid who has now progressed to the semi-final.
It was a beautiful game of football. Who knows when we would see Leicester in the Champions League again?
